The Haitian Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad (MHAVE) has issued a strong condemnation of recent discriminatory remarks made by several U.S. politicians targeting the Haitian diaspora, particularly those living in Springfield, Ohio. These remarks, part of a broader campaign of misinformation, aim to demonize Haitians for political gain.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Haitians abroad have fallen victim to such campaigns, which seek to tarnish their image and portray them as a threat. MHAVE calls for unity among all Haitians to speak out with one voice and reaffirm their dignity and humanity in the face of these unwarranted attacks.
Minister of Haitians Living Abroad Reacts
Minister Dominique Dupuy of MHAVE convened a virtual meeting on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, with over 50 community leaders, religious figures, and heads of organizations that work with migrants in the affected areas and across the United States. The meeting included the participation of Dr. Nikita Séjour, an advisor to the Prime Minister, and was aimed at showing solidarity with the affected community and defining a collective response to these attacks.
“We want not only to express our solidarity but also to send a clear signal that we strongly reject these statements, which degrade the dignity of our compatriots and could put their lives in danger,” said Minister Dupuy.
Solidarity and Action to Protect the Haitian Community
MHAVE, along with diaspora organizations, is currently assessing all possible strategies to support and protect Haitian migrants who have been targeted by intimidation and stigmatization, whether in Springfield or elsewhere. The ministry encourages all legal initiatives aimed at defending the rights of Haitian migrants and ensuring their safety.
In coordination with diplomatic and consular missions, MHAVE is deploying a support mechanism to assist Haitians in the diaspora, regardless of their location. This effort includes working with U.S. authorities to ensure that the Haitian community is protected from harm and to prevent further attacks against their dignity.
Rejection of the Demonization Campaign
MHAVE has been clear in its stance against the false narrative and misinformation that paints Haitians in Springfield as a threat to the local community. Some U.S. politicians have made baseless claims, accusing Haitian migrants of being responsible for various criminal acts, including the alleged harm of livestock, a rumor that has been thoroughly debunked.
These false accusations demonstrate that Haitians are being unfairly demonized, and MHAVE is committed to fighting this propaganda while collaborating with relevant sectors to protect the rights and dignity of Haitians in the diaspora.
MHAVE urges all Haitians abroad to remain vigilant, engage in legal processes to defend their rights, and work with local authorities to ensure their safety from any form of intimidation and stigmatization.
Unity Among Haitians Is Stronger Than Ever
MHAVE reiterates its commitment to strengthening solidarity among Haitian communities worldwide, as it works tirelessly to provide legal and diplomatic support to Haitians who fall victim to mistreatment and discrimination in foreign countries. The ministry calls on all Haitians, regardless of their location, to stand united and show the world that they are a proud people who demand respect and dignity.
MHAVE affirms that the fight for the protection of the rights of Haitians in the diaspora is a national priority, and it will not waver in its efforts to safeguard compatriots against any discriminatory or intimidating actions.
